Write a response to questions 2-3. Must be 150-300 word each.
2. Drug addiction is a major concern in our society today. An addict is unable to control the use of the drug they are addicted to. Despite the harm it may cause, an addict continues to use the drug or drugs they are addicted to. Drug addiction begins with recreational use of the drug. For some people, this use gets out of hand and grows into addiction. Some drugs are more highly addictive (Drug addiction). Common symptoms of drug abuse include the following: intense urges for the drug, building up of drug tolerance, spending money on the drug even when you can’t afford it, doing things you wouldn’t normally do to get the drug such as stealing, when trying to quit experiencing withdrawal symptoms (Drug addiction). Many drug addicts lie and manipulate to get the drug or maintain secrecy about the drug use.
3. Addiction is a very real concern within our society. An addiction can include both illegal and legal substances. The development of an addiction occurs when an individual transition from a casual use of a substance to a compulsory use of the drug (Robinson, & Berridge, 2003). That is, when an individual becomes addicted to a substance, even if that substance is legal such as alcohol and tobacco, the addiction becomes the driving force for the individual. This person becomes ruled by their addiction. According to Carlson (2013), when an individual becomes addicted to a substance, that person, essentially, becomes a slave to the addiction, with every action an obligatory response to fulfilling the demands of the drug dependency (p. 615). Studies suggest that when people become addicted to a drug, they continue taking the drug to avoid withdrawal and its unpleasant symptoms. According to Robinson and Berridge (2003), “The most intuitive explanation for addiction is the traditional view that drugs are taken first because they are pleasant, but with repeated drug use homeostatic neuroadaptations lead to tolerance and dependence, such that unpleasant withdrawal symptoms ensue upon the cessation of use.” (para. 4) This concept correlates with the positive/negative reinforcement process noted by Carlson (2013).
