Evidence is a piece of information – such as an observation or measurement – that helps explain how we know what we know. When describing evidence, it will usually be something that you see, hear or otherwise observed.

The interpretation of evidence helps us to better understand our world. There are many ways to make interpretations. The best way to interpret evidence is to connect it with what you already know.

For this assignment

Create a table with two columns (as shown below). In the first column list a piece of evidence quoted from the text, then, in the second column, use that piece of evidence to make an interpretation. In total, I would like to see five pieces of evidence with accompanying interpretation. See example below that shows one piece of evidence with its interpretation – this would be worth 1 point for this assignment. Please use a different quote from the text than the one I use in my example.

Evidence

(I saw, I heard, I read in the text…)

Interpretation

(I wondered, I made a connection, I thought…)

EXAMPLE: “Most oil is consumed in automobiles. In 2009, there were 1,201 automobiles for every 1,000 eligible drivers in the United States. In 2010, we consumed 1 billion gallons of gasoline every 30 hours and travelled more than 6.5 billion miles each day. In China, there were 9 automobiles per 1,000 people in 2007, but in 2009, China surpassed the United States as the world’s largest automobile market.” (Garrison, p. 485, footnote in Sec. 17.2)

EXAMPLE: I wonder why there are more cars in the U.S. than eligible drivers and if this will change as more transit options become available.

I also connect these statistics with the fact that China has the largest population of any country on Earth. If they become gas-guzzlers like U.S. citizens, I wonder how much that will accelerate global warming.
