2) Describe the social-psychological principle you think is relevant. Here you need to define and describe the principle or theory, and show that you understand this principle fully. For example, if youre describing a scene that has something to do with cognitive dissonance theory, youll need to explain the theory in your own words. Or, if youre describing a scene that has to do with conformity, you would need to define what conformity is, what some types of conformity are (e.g., public conformity vs. private conformity), and relevant causes of conformity (e.g., informational vs. normative influence). In other words, you must do a lot more than simply name the principle or theory; you need to show that you really know it. Note: when describing your theories, make sure to cite your sources! You should provide at least 10 sources. Neither WIKIPEDIA nor your TEXTBOOK counts as a source! More info will be given on this as the semester progresses. 3) Be specific about how the material conforms or fails to conform to the principle youve identified. Does the scene depict something consistent with the principle or not? For example, if its relevant to cognitive dissonance theory, precisely how is it relevant (what are the dissonant cognitions? How is dissonance resolved? Or if the scene is relevant to conformity, what kind of conformity is shown? Does it fit with research findings in the conformity literature?) Its very important that you do not just say that this scene illustrates conformity. You must be specific on precisely how and in what form the scene illustrates conformity.
