Guidelines for Developing a Philosophy of Nursing
Philosophy is concerned with the values and beliefs of a discipline and with the values and beliefs held by members of the discipline.

This paper can be written in the first person and should reflect your personal values and beliefs. Incorporate the four concepts of

the metaparadigm of nursing (person, environment, health, and nursing) into your narrative.

Address the following areas: Provide narrative support for statements

is providing care, promoting education and maintain safety at all times.

emotional and physical need.
• What is unique about nurses and the nursing profession? Nursing is consider health and helping at their least point of their

need.

Purpose: This assignment is designed to foster the student’s personal reflection of what professional nursing is and how it has evolved throughout the program. The student will combine knowledge learned from their initial nursing education, their own nursing experience, and what has been learned during the BSN program. The reflection paper will express the writer’s belief about themselves as a professional nurse.

Directions: After reflection and review of nursing theories and other professional literature, develop an essay which addresses these elements:
• Initial motivation for becoming a nurse
• Motivation to return to school to earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing after earning an associate degree in nursing
• Personal beliefs and views of nursing as a discipline and profession
o Includes a discussion of a definition or view of nursing from the literature, famous figure in nursing, or national/international nursing organization; includes citations as appropriate
• Description of how this view of nursing has changed as a result of completing this program
• Description of an artistic model created by you which represents you as a professional nurse (e.g., story, drawing, music, collage, poem, video)

The narrative should not exceed 4-6 pages (excluding title and reference pages). APA format will be used for design and citations. Please note: Students may use first person narrative. A running head and abstract are unnecessary for this assignment. The creative representation will be shared in class. The final paper will be typewritten, double-spaced, and submitted to e-College. Introduction:

With the increased mobility of human populations, diseases can quickly spread around the world. In addition, changes in vaccination practices have indicated an increase in communicable diseases that were once thought to be under control. These global health issues present new problems for community health officials. In this task, you will analyze a specific, recent outbreak of a global communicable disease that has crossed international borders (i.e. TB outbreak, Haiti to U.S.). Choose one of the following communicable disease outbreaks to address in your task:

• avian influenza
• measles
• respiratory syndrome coronavirus
• meningococcal disease
• tuberculosis
• malaria

Requirements:

A. Analyze the selected communicable disease outbreak (suggested length of 2–3 pages) by doing the following:

1. Describe a specific, communicable disease outbreak.

Note: This may include the name of the disease, countries involved, date discovered, and date the disease reached certain countries.

2. Analyze the epidemiological determinants of the outbreak.
a. Discuss the route of transmission of the disease causing the outbreak.
b. Discuss any risk factors involved.
3. Discuss how the outbreak could affect your community at a systems level (i.e., how it will affect the functioning of schools, local government, businesses, hospitals).
4. Explain what the reporting protocol would be if an outbreak were to occur in your community.
