The Future of Nursing

Order Description
Provide in depth exploration of each of the two selected IOM Report Recommendations for nursing with insight into the effects on the future of nursing including sources to validate opinions. Use current professional literature and peer reviewed research to support the recommendations. Be sure to include how these recommendations will affect the future of the nursing profession. Recommendation 4: Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020. Academic nurse leaders across all schools of nursing should work together to increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree from 50 to 80 percent by 2020. These leaders should partner with education accrediting bodies, private and public funders, and employers to ensure funding, monitor progress, and increase the diversity of students to create a workforce prepared to meet the demands of diverse populations across the lifespan.
• The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, working in collaboration with the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, should require all nursing schools to offer defined academic pathways, beyond articulation agreements, that promote seamless access for nurses to higher levels of education.
• Health care organizations should encourage nurses with associate’s and diploma degrees to enter baccalaureate nursing programs within 5 years of graduation by offering tuition reimbursement, creating a culture that fosters continuing education, and providing a salary differential and promotion.
Recommendation 8: Build an infrastructure for the collection and analysis of interprofessional health care workforce data. The National Health Care Workforce Commission, with oversight from the Government Accountability Office and the Health Resources and Services Administration, should lead a collaborative effort to improve research and the collection and analysis of data on health care workforce requirements. The Workforce Commission and the Health Resources and Services Administration should collaborate with state licensing boards, state nursing workforce centers, and the Department of Labor in this effort to ensure that the data are timely and publicly accessible.
• The Workforce Commission and the Health Resources and Services Administration should set standards for the collection of the minimum data set by state licensing boards; oversee, coordinate, and house the data; and make the data publicly accessible.
• The Workforce Commission and the Health Resources and Services Administration should establish a monitoring system that uses the most current analytic approaches and data from the minimum data set to systematically measure and project nursing workforce requirements by role, skill mix, region, and demographics.
• The Workforce Commission and the Health Resources and Services Administration should coordinate workforce research efforts with the Department of Labor, state and regional educators, employers, and state nursing workforce centers to identify regional health care workforce needs, and establish regional targets and plans for appropriately increasing the supply of health professionals.

Holistic Professional Nursing Capstone Project: Evaluation of Plan Effectiveness Criteria (phase 7) & Final submission (phase 8)
This was a 10-week project. This is my week 10 final submission that will tie it all together. I have attached all of my papers for phases 1-6. I have also attached another student’s paper as an exmaple (I ONLY need a 2 page word document for phases 7 & 8, not the whole paper like the sample has. Task Description
Following the education session (assessment task 2) an audience member approaches you to discuss diet and healthy lifestyle that is more specific to their individual circumstance. Continue using your assigned scenario from assessment task 2. Refer to the following page for more information relating to your scenario that has been obtained from the audience member. Prepare a written response to the subheadings and dot points listed below.
Introduction

Case study
Scenario 4 – A group of middle aged aborigional men.
You are a nurse working at the local Aboriginal Medical Service in an urban area. The Indigenous health worker Frank has organised a 12 week healthy lifestyle program for his middle aged (45- 55 years) overweight male clients. Frank has asked you to present the session on healthy eating.

One of the participants named Frank approaches you in the afternoon tea break following your education session. Frank is a 45 year old Aboriginal man originally from Normanton, a small town in northwest Queensland. He tells you that many of his family members have diabetes and some have even died from cardiovascular disease. Frank has a young family and wants to ensure he is around to see his kids grow up, but he feels that it’s only a matter of time before he is diagnosed with diabetes because it runs in his family.
He says ‘I know my belly is big, probably bigger than it should be, but everyone in my family is big, I guess we are just big boned’. Frank says during the week he enjoys having a hamburger and chips from the local take away shop. He works for a local transport company in the office, so walking to the shop for his lunch allows him to stretch his legs and get up from the computer.

Surgical Nursing Care Total Knee Replacement

Order Description
Background Information
Margaret is a 56 year old lady who lives with her husband. Due to worsening osteoarthritis Margaret is waiting to undergo a right total knee replacement (TKR). When Margaret was first referred to the orthopaedic surgeon, 14 months ago she was told that due to her weight she wouldn’t be placed on the waiting list due to both the surgical risks and the expected success of the operation. At this time Margaret had a body mass index (BMI) of 40 (height 168cm, weight 113.4kg) and was told by the surgeon that she had to bring her BMI down to 35 (weight 97.5kg) before he would consider operating. Margaret has worked hard to lose the weight but is now suffering extreme pain in her right knee which is preventing her from losing any more weight as her mobility is considerably restricted. Margaret has seen the orthopaedic surgeon again following a further referral from her GP. Her BMI is currently 37 (weight 104.3kg) and he has agreed that he will operate on her.
PC: Osteoarthritis right knee, on waiting list for a right total knee replacement.

HPC: Has been suffering with osteoarthritis in the right knee since 2011, this has been getting gradually worse and Margaret is now in severe pain and has a restricted functional ability.
PMH: Morbidly obese

Part B my response

All surgical patients are at risk of developing a surgical site infection (SSI), however Margaret could be considered at a higher risk due to a number of factors; including being obese and the nature of her surgery (orthopaedic joint replacement). Using the literature critically discuss whether Margaret is indeed at a higher risk of developing a SSI and present the nursing assessments and actions to minimise this risk. Your response must be discussed in relation to Margaret’s case and it must also demonstrate a clear link to how you will take this knowledge into practice.
