Assignment 1: Biology Article

Due Week 5 and worth 120 points

Use the Internet and / or the Strayer Learning Resource Center to research aspects of biology.

Select an article from a magazine or newspaper that has something in it that pertains to biology. This will serve as the “target article” for this assignment. For instance, you can select an article about medicine, invasive species, nature, conservation, genetic technology, ecology, or any other topic that is related to biology. One purpose of this assignment is to help you become aware of how biology is related to your everyday life.

Write a one to three (1-3) page paper in which you:

Summarize the article in one (1) or more paragraphs, using your own words. Be sure to identify the article using an in-text citation in the body of the paper, as well as a reference in the reference section.
Explain how the article relates to this course. Identify which biological concepts from the course and / or text are relevant to the topic covered in the article. Citing the course text, discuss the ways in which this course does (or doesn’t) provide background information to help you understand the article and the larger issues surrounding it.
Explain why the article caught your attention. Relate the article to your life and to issues that are important to you. Discuss how or if the scientific knowledge about the topic covered in the article affects you directly or indirectly.
Discuss your opinion on how research on this topic should be funded. State whether you think taxpayer monies should support research on this topic or whether such research in this area should be funded by the private sector. Rate the importance of research on this topic, relative to other areas of research.
In addition to the target article, you should use at least one additional resource, such as your textbook or another article. You must have a reference section which contains an APA reference to your chosen article and all other sources. Additionally, you must provide in-text citations (in APA format) to your references in the body of the text. Integrate all sources into your paper using proper techniques of quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing, along with your in-text citations.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

3. At a local hospital, a decision was made recently to downsize the nursing staff. The local television station sent a reporter and camera crew to interview the administrator regarding the impact of this action on patient care. After 20 minutes filming the interview, the reporter left. That evening a 15-second segment of the interview was shown, that left an unfavorable impression regarding the impact on quality. The administrator wondered what went wrong. Explain how more control could have been used to send out the message about the downsizing.
4. In recognition of the post-purchase role of promotion, what strategies would you suggest for: (a) a busy hospital emergency room, (b) an executive fitness program that provides health screening and fitness evaluation, and (c) an occupational medicine program that contracts its services to companies?
Chapter 12:
5. Recently, the physician marketing task force at State University Medical Center developed a physician referral directory and advertisement. The target was primary care physicians in the region who could refer patients to State University for tertiary care. A cardiologist who was an undergraduate English major chaired the committee and drafted the materials. Three months after distribution of the advertisement and directory, responses were disappointing. Explain how this process could have been improved to increase likely response.
6. The director of a cardiac rehabilitation program was approached recently by a sales representative from the community newspaper selling advertising space. The sales representative underscored the fact that the paper had the largest circulation of any of the three papers serving the area, and it had the lowest cost-per-thousand. Before deciding to use this medium, what other factors should the program director consider?

HOW DO NURSING STUDENTS AND NURSE FACULTY MEMBERS CONTRIBUTE TO INCIVILITY IN NURSING EDUCATION? • WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF INCIVILITY IN NURSING EDUCATION? • WHAT REMEDIES MIGHT BE EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING OR REDUCING INCIVILITY?

HOW DO NURSING STUDENTS AND NURSE FACULTY MEMBERS CONTRIBUTE TO INCIVILITY IN NURSING EDUCATION? • WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF INCIVILITY IN NURSING EDUCATION? • WHAT REMEDIES MIGHT BE EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING OR REDUCING INCIVILITY?

April 2, 2018Orders In ProgressClark and Springer (2007) conducted a qualitative study to examine the perceptions of faculty and students in a nursing program on incivility.
• How do nursing students and nurse faculty members contribute to incivility in nursing education?
• What are some of the causes of incivility in nursing education?
• What remedies might be effective in preventing or reducing incivility?
They gathered responses from online surveys with open-ended questions from 36 nurse faculty and 168 nursing students. Each of the researchers reviewed all comments and organized them by themes. They noted four major themes of responses:
• Faculty perceptions of in-class disruption and incivility by students
• Faculty perceptions of out-of-class disruption and incivility by students
• Student perceptions of uncivil behaviors by faculty
• Faculty and student perceptions of possible causes of incivility in nursing education
A total of eight sub-themes were identified among the faculty comments on types of in-class disruptions. Those subthemes were:
• Disrupting others by talking in class
• Making negative remarks/disrespectful comments toward faculty
• Leaving early or arriving late
• Using cell phones
• Sleeping/not paying attention
• Bringing children to class
• Wearing immodest attire

If the introduced gene encodes a protein that is also found in bacteria—for example, a universally used glycolysis enzyme—then expression of the eukaryotic gene may produce a protein that functions in the bacterial cell. The mouse gene for a glycolysis enzyme is introduced into an E. coli cell that has a mutant gene for the bacterial version of the same enzyme. Even though the mouse enzyme should function in the bacterial cell and restore the cell’s ability to perform glycolysis, it does not.
